Intro to Retro Subculture

Read time: 2–3 minutes

We didn’t start as a “brand.” We started as collectors who needed something.

Allow us to introduce ourselves, We are Lyle and Marlon, 90s kids with backgrounds in Gaming, Music, Hip Hop culture, Car Culture, Photography and Visual Arts.

Retro Subculture started as a problem-solving mission that evolved into a passion project.

For Marlon, it was simple: he wanted access to good wheels but couldnt find any locally and didnt want the wait that came with overseas options at the time.

For me (Lyle), it started as a way to help solve that problem. I’m the obsessive problem-solver type. The perfectionist who gets bothered by “almost right” and "It can't be done".

Then it shifted to " if we have this problem, then maybe others do too . So we stopped thinking “how do we get wheels?” and started thinking “how do we provide wheels?”

(It started as a fix for one person. Then we realised it was a fix for a whole scene.)

The first thing we refused to accept was “normal.”

In the hobby, “normal packaging” often means no frills, no extras.

We couldn’t do that, not because we wanted to be fancy, but because we believe the moment you open the package should feel like part of the hobby. Customising shouldn’t be the only ‘experience’, receiving the parts should feel intentional too.

So from the start we aimed for three things: quality, packaging, and a brand experience that feels intentional the second you touch it.

(We didn’t want “delivered”. We wanted “unboxed”.)

We will be expanding on all the topics in their own blogs, as well as more topics as the year goes on.

For now, that's a bit of a teaser of what's to come. Please subscribe for more!
